…Friend Indeed by Tim McCaffrey
The Sierra Mountain Times was founded in September of 2004 and has been an active member of the community for over five years. With the SMT’s focus on human interest, local history, local events (both governmental and social), and of course our regular weekly columns, it has been the goal to open up to you, the reader, new information and bring the faces of your neighbors into your living room.
Revenue at the SMT is entirely dependent on display and classified advertising sales. The SMT is a free publication and we pride ourselves in this. But it has been a lesson learned this past year that publishing a free community newspaper is not inherently a high profit endeavor. In fact, with the economic downturn, I have noticed belt straps tightening and advertising falling short. But I have also noticed that in our community there is a genuine love for this “little” newspaper that comes out every week. I have heard comments throughout this last year of how our articles have brought joy to many faces. How there is a feeling of pride that no other local paper brings. This paper belongs to all of us and we as a community are all invested. Whether it is with advertising, donations and/or our hearts, we all put stock into this paper.
This year we have the ambitious goal of increasing the number of pages per paper as well as publishing more papers than we ever have. We currently publish over 5,000 papers a week. This isn’t nearly enough for our community, since we run out every week. If you have trouble finding it, please consider a subscription. I hope that you can join me in reaching that goal. A simple contribution made to The Sierra Mountain Times of any amount will be greatly appreciated and help our little paper continue. By helping The Sierra Mountain Times you will be helping our community.
Sincerely,
Tim McCaffrey
Publisher/Editor and Chief
