Kids Love to Cook! By Toni Richardson
Old Fashion Gingerbread(Parental Participation required)
Originally gingerbread was served as a bread spread with butter to accompany a meal. In recent years it has become a dessert topped with whipped cream, ice cream or applesauce.
You will need:
1 cup molasses (light or dark)
••• cup boiling water
5 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
13/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups flour
Wash your hands well and read all the directions. Ask an adult to help you preheat the oven to 375°.
1. Measure molasses into a large bowl.
2. Boil water in the microwave. Ask an adult to help you pour the boiling water over the molasses.
3. Immediately add the butter. Stir the butter, molasses and water together until well mixed.
4. Add the salt, ginger, soda and stir lightly.
5. Gently stir in the flour just enough to moisten and mix.
6. Spoon into a 9X9X 2 inch baking pan.
7. Bake 25 to 35 minutes or until the top springs back when pressed lightly and the gingerbread is starting to pull away from the sides of the pan.
Spread slices with butter or softened cream cheese.
A great bread to serve with ham.
