Holiday Crostini (Parental participation required)
In Italian, crostini means ‘little crusts’ and began as a way to use the last bit of bread from yesterday’s loaf. These appetizers are a symbol of hospitality in Florence, Italy.
You will need:
2 narrow loaves of Italian or French bread
1 cup (4ounces) grated Swiss cheese
½ cup mayonnaise
½ cup sour cream
1 (0.7-ounce) envelope of Italian dressing mix
1 small green bell pepper
1 small red bell pepper
Wash your hands well and read all the directions.
Ask an adult to help you pre-heat the oven to 350°.
1. Grate the cheese into a medium bowl.
2. Add the mayonnaise, sour cream and Italian dressing mix to the bowl. Stir together. Set aside.
2. With your scissors cut the peppers into narrow strips. Remove all the seeds.
3. Cut across each strip, with your scissors, to make diced bell peppers.
4. Ask an adult to help you slice the narrow loaves into 40, ½ inch slices of bread.
5. Spread one side of each bread slice and place on a baking sheet.
6. Sprinkle each slice with diced red and green bell peppers.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes and serve immediately.
