Sonora Goes Cajun!
Meet Dawn Sarto, a ten-year member of the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club!

The aroma of catfish and the sounds of zydeco music filled the air, inside the John Muir Building at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, October 18th, as the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club staged “Cajun Fest 12!” The event, which is the club’s major fundraiser of the year, gave local folks (and a few visitors) an opportunity to experience an authentic Cajun celebration! The dinner included deep-fried catfish, Polish hot link sausage, chicken gumbo, red beans and rice, salad, and bread pudding with Jack Daniels sauce! The cuisine was hot and spicy, and so was the music, performed by the popular Blues Box Bayou Band! Ooo-ee! To contribute to, or join the Rotary call Jim Cherry at 532-0052.
A lovely lady was snatched off the dance floor, brought up on stage and provided with a musical washboard and two spoons! The new “band member,” Ilene Tassano of Crystal Falls provided beautiful musical accompaniment!
You haven’t lived ‘till you’ve tried Cajun food; to which many of these people will attest!
“I’m shaking! I’m excited! Very excited! I never win. This is great!” exclaims Angie Scott of Sonora (far right) after she wins a $1,000 check from Wal-Mart. Asked how she would spend the money, she replied, “My husband, Tim has a few ideas. We talked about a high-definition TV, maybe. He’s thinking fishing.” To which Tim responds, “Yes, my wife could use some fishing gear!” (Pictured, left to right are: event announcer Patrick Greenwell, Wal-Mart assistant manager Julie Cox-Durden, Sonora Sunrise Rotary President Jim Cherry and winner Angie Scott)
